sleep is the cousin to death :: opening 3.18.11

i am excited to share with you my new exhibit and companion to the death portraits…

SLEEP IS THE COUSIN TO DEATH
Friday, March 18 ยท 6:00pm – 10:00pm
Saans Fine Art Photography Gallery and Studio
173 E Broadway (300 south)

death portraits was a study of the removal of life, this is now a study of the coming back to life.

the portraits from this series were taken IMMEDIATELY after the subjects have crawled out of their bed after a full nights sleep – to study and witness the spirit of the person rise from it’s descended layers of sleephood.

i chose for this project to focus on women only. i am fascinated by what we as a society choose to expose to the world and what it is that we choose to hide behind. portraits of women in the morning perhaps help us remove the masks we hold, open our vulnerability, and thus find common ground amongst one another.

in addition to the SLEEP IS THE COUSIN TO DEATH exhibit, i will rehang and reshow my past exhibit, death portraits as a duo show. – if you missed the one night only show last year, now is your chance to see it.
as many of you may recall, this project was a study of the connection of the soul and the body of an individual. what is communicated if we try to remove that vital element we call that “spark of life” away from the eyes, what remains? this simply started as a question and observation and developed into truly one of the most personal experiences i have encountered through my own art.

nuff said!
come to the exhibits and see the work.
bring a friend. make it a date.
look forward to seeing you there!

sleep is the cousin to death

as many of you may recall, i recently covered an intriguing project of the human portrait which was entitled “death portraits“. this project was a study of the connection of the soul and the body of an individual. what is communicated if we try to remove that vital element we call life, that “spark of life” pulled away from the eyes, what remains? this simply started as a question and developed into truly one of the most personal experiences i have encountered through my own art.

and now i am excited to share with you my next project and companion to the death portraits…sleep is the cousin to death.

this series of portraits are taken IMMEDIATELY after the subjects have crawled out of their bed.
why? i am fascinated by what we choose to expose to the world and what it is that we choose to hide behind. i am fascinated with portraits that remove the masks we hold, open our vulnerability, and thus find common ground amongst one another. i am also intrigued to study the details of the portrait and see what subtleties take shape and transform the contours of the face, the texture of the hair, the involuntary personalities and characteristics that have been molded and come to life from a nights sleep.
where death portraits was a study of the removal of life, this is now a study of the coming back to life.

this blog post has two purposes, so listen up…
a) to announce the opening to the “sleep is the cousin to death” exhibit. opening date of the exhibit will be march 18th, 2011 and will hang the entire month of march.
come join us and see the sleep is the cousin to death portrait series as well as the death portraits (dual show).
b) those that attend my “own now” workshop will have first access to invaluable learning experiences as they are welcome to join me as i photograph the current “sleep…” portrait series. this workshop is a one day workshop where i will be lecturing on how to find your voice and vision by following the creative process. what better way than to walk the walk? are you questioning if a one day workshop is not enough time? – then take advantage of the opportunity and join me on some one-on-one shoots. the time is yours and it is now.
want to learn more about the workshop? visit the own now website.

looking forward to seeing you in march!

workshop has been blessed with a name

Screen shot 2010-12-29 at 1.37.52 AM

latest news of my upcoming workshop: along with it’s incredibly handsome good looks and best of manners at the dinner table…it has now been blessed with a name, the “own now” project.

why do i say “project” instead of workshop?
definition of the word project reads: “an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular aim.”
and that is exactly what i intend to do with this workshop. my aim, is to help other photographer artists develop and/or refine and be inspired by their “own” style, their “own” vision, their “own” voice, and to “own” it, take confidence in it, and push it hard…and to do it “now”.
thus, the “own now” project has been born.

own now project.

(if you haven’t gathered, my best work comes by pressure.) ๐Ÿ™‚

right now i am gathering interest of subjects. subjects of all walks of life…male, female, young, old, black, white, and polka-dotted with freckles, healthy and attractive, tired and miserable, wrinkles and the sagging truth…you get the point, i want you in front of my camera.

if you, or someone you know wants to be a part of another fascinating study of the human portrait then drop me a line at duston@redfoxwedding.com. and i will be happy to share more of what i have on the boiler.
